Súlyaránya is a term used in Hungarian to denote a ratio that incorporates weights to reflect the relative importance or frequency of different components in a comparison. The concept is common in contexts where parts of a whole contribute unevenly, so a simple unweighted ratio would be misleading.

In mathematical usage, súlyaránya involves weights attached to individual quantities. If quantities xi are associated with nonnegative weights wi, one often forms weighted aggregates such as the weighted sum A = sum wi xi and the total weight B = sum wi. The ratio A/B then represents a weighted average or, more generally, a ratio of a weighted quantity to its total weight. This framing is central to many applied calculations, where different items must contribute according to their significance.

Practical applications of súlyaránya appear in statistics, economics, engineering, and the physical sciences. Examples include calculating a weighted average grade from exams with different credit values, determining a portfolio’s return with assets assigned varying weights, or comparing forces or measurements where different samples are accorded different importance. In physics, when weights are proportional to masses in the same gravitational field, certain weight ratios reduce to mass ratios because the gravitational factor cancels out.
