Rüsimused is a term originating from Estonian folklore, referring to mischievous or troublesome spirits that inhabit forests and swamps. These beings are often depicted as small, often unsightly creatures with an affinity for playing tricks on travelers. Their primary motivation is not necessarily malicious, but rather a desire for amusement, which can lead to people getting lost, experiencing strange noises, or finding their belongings misplaced.

Folklore describes rüsimused as having a variety of appearances, but they are generally characterized by their connection to nature. Some tales portray them as having greenish or brownish skin, blending in with moss and earth, while others suggest they can shapeshift into animal forms or even mimic human voices. Their presence is often associated with the rustling of leaves when there is no wind, inexplicable shadows, or the feeling of being watched in the wilderness.

While generally not considered dangerous in the same way as more malevolent spirits, encountering rüsimused was often seen as an omen of ill fortune or a sign that one had strayed too far into their territory. Superstitions suggested ways to appease or ward them off, such as leaving small offerings of food or singing protective songs.
