Ruwhheid, commonly spelled ruwheid in Dutch, is a term used to describe the roughness or coarseness of a surface—the degree to which it deviates from a perfectly smooth plane. It is a fundamental attribute in many fields, including engineering, materials science, geology, and tactile perception. In standard Dutch, ruwheid (not ruwhheid) is the conventional spelling, while ruwhheid may appear as a variant spelling or error; the meaning remains the same.

Roughness is typically characterized by surface texture measurements rather than a single value. In mechanical contexts, parameters such as the arithmetic roughness Ra, the root-mean-square roughness Rq, and the mean peak-to-valley height Rz describe the vertical deviations of the surface profile. Measurements can be performed with contact profilometers or with non-contact optical methods such as confocal microscopy and white-light or laser scanning. International standards, including ISO 4287 for contact profilometry and ISO 25178 for areal roughness, provide definitions, tolerances, and measurement geometry.

Applications and implications: The roughness of a surface influences friction, wear, lubrication, sealing, and heat transfer, as well as the aesthetic and tactile qualities of a product. It is controlled during manufacturing by selecting appropriate processes (machining, grinding, polishing, coating) and by applying post-processing steps to achieve the required finish. Roughness is also relevant in natural contexts, where the texture of rocks, soils, and other substrates affects hydrology, erosion, and ecological interactions.
