Ruudunpäivitys, often translated as screen refresh or display refresh, refers to the process by which a computer monitor or display device redraws the image it presents to the user. This occurs repeatedly and rapidly to create the illusion of motion and to display any changes made to the visual content. The speed at which a screen refreshes is measured in Hertz (Hz), indicating the number of times the image is redrawn per second. A higher refresh rate generally results in a smoother visual experience, particularly noticeable in fast-paced video games or when scrolling through content.

The process involves the graphics card, or GPU, sending new image data to the display controller. The display controller then instructs the pixels on the screen to change their color and brightness accordingly. This cycle repeats continuously. Lower refresh rates can lead to perceived flickering or motion blur, especially if the refresh rate is not synchronized with the frame rate being output by the graphics card. Technologies like adaptive sync (e.g., NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync) aim to improve the user experience by synchronizing the display's refresh rate with the graphics card's frame rate, further reducing visual artifacts.
