Rusticles are icicles formed from the rusting of iron or steel. They typically form in environments with high humidity and readily available iron, such as damp industrial sites or mines. The process begins as water comes into contact with iron, initiating a redox reaction that leads to the formation of iron oxides, commonly known as rust. As this rusty water drips, it can freeze, with each subsequent drip adding more rust-infused water that then freezes, gradually building up the icicle-like structure.

These formations are often reddish-brown in color due to the presence of iron oxides. Their shape can vary, but they often resemble stalactites hanging from metal structures. The growth of rusticles is dependent on factors like temperature, moisture levels, and the composition of the iron source. While aesthetically interesting, rusticles are a visible sign of ongoing corrosion and can indicate structural weakness in the underlying metal. They are a natural phenomenon resulting from the chemical weathering of iron in specific environmental conditions.
