Routinisation is a sociological and organizational concept that refers to the process by which a behavior, practice, or activity becomes habitual, automatic, and predictable. It involves the reduction of uncertainty and the establishment of regular patterns of action within a social system or an individual's life. This process can occur in various contexts, from individual daily habits to the standard operating procedures of large institutions.

The development of routines often stems from a need for efficiency, stability, and predictability. When individuals or groups face complex or repetitive tasks, routinisation can simplify decision-making and reduce cognitive load. For example, a morning routine of waking up, exercising, and preparing breakfast requires less conscious thought than deciding on a new course of action each day. Similarly, in organizations, standardized procedures for tasks like customer service or production ensure consistent quality and operational flow.

However, routinisation is not always positive. Over-routinisation can lead to inflexibility, resistance to change, and a stifling of creativity. When practices become too entrenched, individuals or organizations may struggle to adapt to new circumstances or to innovate. There can also be a loss of individual agency if behaviors become so automatic that they are performed without conscious reflection or critical evaluation.
