Routingmatris is a conceptual data structure used to model routing decisions in communication and transport networks. In its simplest form, it is a two-dimensional matrix where the element R[i][j] encodes information used to route from source node i to destination node j. Entries may store a numeric cost, a next-hop identifier, or a boolean reachability flag, and matrices may be weighted or unweighted, dense or sparse.

Purpose and relation to other concepts: The routingmatris provides a compact representation of feasible paths and associated costs, enabling analysis, optimization, and routing protocol design. It is closely related to the adjacency matrix and to routing tables; in practice, a routing process transforms the routingmatris into actual forwarding rules used by network devices.

Construction and updates: The matrix can be static, representing a fixed topology, or dynamic, updated by routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, or distance-vector methods. Cost values reflect link metrics like delay, bandwidth, congestion, or administrative preference. When network conditions change, corresponding entries in the routingmatris are updated and may trigger propagation of new routing information to converge on consistent decisions.

Algorithms and computation: All-pairs shortest-path algorithms (such as Floyd–Warshall) operate on a routingmatris to produce optimal path costs and next-hops. For a single source, Dijkstra’s algorithm is commonly applied. In distributed systems, each node maintains a local portion of the matrix and exchanges updates to maintain global consistency.

Applications and variants: Routingmatris models find use in data centers, carrier networks, and transportation systems for planning, traffic engineering, and fault-tolerance analyses. Variants include stochastic routingmatris, which incorporates probabilistic transit, and multi-criteria matrices that integrate additional objectives beyond cost. Limitations include scalability and convergence challenges in large, dynamic networks.
