A ropeway is a transport system that moves passengers or goods by suspended carriers supported and propelled by one or more stationary cables. The vehicles are attached to a moving rope and travel across a route supported by towers or pylons, often over difficult terrain such as valleys or steep slopes. Ropeways are designed to minimize ground disruption while providing reliable service in challenging environments.

Common configurations include gondola lifts, where enclosed cabins are carried along the rope; chairlifts, which suspend open seats; and aerial tramways, which shuttle a pair of larger cars between terminals. Some ropeways also function as cargo lines in mining, forestry, or industrial settings. The choice of system depends on terrain, required capacity, and weather conditions.

Ropeways have roots in the 19th century, initially used for mining and timber transport. They expanded to passenger service in mountainous regions in the 20th century, aided by advances in motors, control systems, and safety mechanisms. Modern ropeways rely on electric drives at terminals, redundancy in braking and power, and routine inspections of cables and equipment.

Key components include towers or supports, terminal stations, one or more cables, carriers (gondolas or chairs), attachment devices, drive and tensioning gear, and safety systems. Operators monitor weather, perform regular maintenance, and manage loads to maintain safe operation.

Ropeways offer high capacity, rapid transit over rugged terrain, and scenic value, but require substantial capital investment and are susceptible to wind, ice, and other weather conditions. They are widely used in ski resorts, tourist destinations, and remote or difficult-to-access areas.
