Roadsurface refers to the top layer of a road, the part that vehicles actually drive on. Its primary function is to provide a smooth, durable, and safe surface for transportation. Common roadsurface materials include asphalt and concrete. Asphalt surfaces, often called blacktop, are made from a mixture of aggregate (like gravel and sand) and bitumen, a petroleum-based binder. Other less common roadsurface types include gravel roads, which are simply unpaved surfaces covered with compacted gravel, and chip seal, which involves applying a layer of asphalt followed by a layer of small stones.
