Most implementations define a multi-level scale, commonly five levels: Level 1 for low risk, Level 2 for moderate risk, Level 3 for significant risk, Level 4 for high risk, and Level 5 for critical risk. Each level is described by criteria related to the probability of occurrence, the impact or consequence, and sometimes detectability or time to onset. Some variants also incorporate velocity (speed of onset) or exposure duration to refine the ranking.

Applications span various domains, including project management, safety and health, cybersecurity, finance, and regulatory compliance. Riskitasojen helps teams communicate risk status clearly, determine escalation paths, and prioritize control measures and resource allocation.

Assessment method typically involves identifying risks, estimating probability and impact (qualitative or quantitative), and mapping the results to a level using a risk matrix.
