This can encompass a wide range of substances, such as alcohol, nicotine, and illicit drugs, as well as behavioral dependencies like gambling, internet use, and shopping.

The development of dependency is understood to involve intricate interactions between genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and neurobiological changes. Neurochemically, many addictive substances and behaviors trigger the brain's reward system, particularly the release of dopamine, which reinforces the behavior.
