Riippuvuuskäypäilmiöt, or "dependency phenomenon" in English, refers to the complex set of psychological, social, and physical processes that underpin addiction. It is not a single entity but rather a spectrum of behaviors and conditions characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences. This can encompass a wide range of substances, such as alcohol, nicotine, and illicit drugs, as well as behavioral dependencies like gambling, internet use, and shopping.

The development of dependency is understood to involve intricate interactions between genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and neurobiological changes. Neurochemically, many addictive substances and behaviors trigger the brain's reward system, particularly the release of dopamine, which reinforces the behavior. Over time, the brain adapts to these heightened levels of stimulation, leading to tolerance, where more of the substance or more intense engagement is needed to achieve the same effect. This adaptation also contributes to withdrawal symptoms, which are aversive physical and psychological states experienced when the substance or behavior is discontinued.

Social and psychological factors play a crucial role in both the initiation and maintenance of dependency. Stress, trauma, peer influence, and availability of substances or opportunities for addictive behaviors can increase vulnerability. Psychological aspects include the development of coping mechanisms that rely on the addictive behavior to manage negative emotions or achieve a sense of well-being. Recognizing dependency as a complex phenomenon with multiple contributing factors is essential for effective prevention, intervention, and treatment approaches.
