Rhizomeforming refers to the development and maintenance of rhizomes, underground horizontal stems that grow near or below the soil surface and produce shoots and roots at nodes. In plants that form rhizomes, vegetative propagation occurs as these underground stems extend laterally, giving rise to new shoots at the nodes. Rhizomes serve both as a means of persistence through unfavourable conditions and as a way to rapidly colonize space.

A rhizome consists of a stem axis with nodes and internodes, often thickened and capable of storage. Nodes may bear scale leaves, roots, and latent buds that can sprout into shoots. Unlike stolons, which grow above ground and root at the tips, rhizomes typically remain underground or just beneath the soil, allowing buds to stay protected.

Rhizome formation is influenced by genetic factors and environmental conditions such as soil moisture, temperature, and light regimes. In many perennials, rhizomes form during the growing season and persist underground through winter, resuming growth when conditions improve. Hormonal signals regulate bud dormancy and sprouting in the rhizome.

Functions include vegetative propagation, resource storage (carbohydrates), and survival over adverse periods. By spreading horizontally, rhizomes can rapidly occupy space and help plants recover after disturbance. Rhizome-forming species often contribute to soil stabilization and can form extensive clonal colonies.

Common rhizome-forming plants include ginger (Zingiber officinale), iris species, certain grasses such as Bermuda grass, and many ornamental perennials and grasses. In horticulture and agriculture, rhizomes pose both opportunities for clonal propagation and challenges as invasive spreaders; management typically involves physical removal or targeted control of the rhizome network.
