Responent is a term used primarily in speculative or niche technical writings to denote an entity that produces a response to a given input. The coinage blends the verb respond with the agentive suffix -ent, yielding a generic agent noun.

In discussions of artificial intelligence and human–computer interaction, a responent refers to a response generator or mediator that analyzes input—such as a user query or sensor data—and returns an output appropriate to the context. A responent may be realized as software, a hardware module, or an abstract cognitive model.

In discourse analysis and linguistics, the term has appeared as a provisional label for a participant that provides a reply within a communicative sequence. However, it is not as widely adopted as respondent or responder, and its usage is limited to specific authors or theoretical frameworks.

In speculative fiction and ethics discussions, responents are sometimes imagined as intelligent agents whose responsibility for outputs raises questions about accountability, consent, and user autonomy. These uses emphasize the role of the responent in shaping interaction rather than the content alone.
