The process begins with the patient lying inside a large, cylindrical magnet, which generates a strong magnetic field. Radiofrequency pulses are then sent into the body, causing the hydrogen atoms in the body's tissues to align with the magnetic field and emit a signal. This signal is detected by the MRI machine and used to construct an image.

MRI can be used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, including brain tumors, spinal cord injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders. It is particularly useful for imaging soft tissues, such as the brain, muscles, and tendons, which are difficult to visualize with other imaging techniques.
