Resoluteness is the quality of being firmly resolved or determined to pursue a particular course of action or belief. It entails steadiness, firmness of purpose, and sustained effort in the face of obstacles. The term derives from Latin resolutus, the past participle of resolvere, meaning to loosen or to settle; in English it has come to signify decisiveness and firmness.

In practice, resoluteness can support effective goal pursuit, strategic planning, and leadership. It helps individuals endure setbacks, maintain commitments, and align actions with stated values. However, it is not synonymous with inflexibility: resolute individuals may adjust methods or reassess goals while preserving core aims.

Distinctions include resoluteness versus obstinacy and versus rigidity. The former involves rational commitment to a reasonable end, the latter denotes stubborn adherence irrespective of circumstances. In psychology and ethics, resoluteness is often viewed as a positive trait when guided by practical reason and concern for others, and as a possible vice when it ignores evidence or causes harm.

In culture and literature, resolute characters and leaders are commonly portrayed as admirable, highlighting the value of commitment and perseverance. At the same time, narratives frequently warn against excessive decisiveness divorced from reflection or empathy, illustrating the need for balance between determination and adaptability.
