Residuargas is a term used in environmental engineering and industrial hygiene to describe the residual gaseous emissions that remain after primary gas treatment in industrial processes. The word blends residuo (residue) and gas, but its exact meaning and scope vary by region and organization. In practice, residuargas refer to the portion of a process exhaust that still contains volatile components after initial cleanup steps.

The composition of residuargas is highly process-dependent. They commonly include volatile organic compounds, sulfur compounds, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, methane, and other trace inorganic gases. Concentrations are usually lower than in untreated exhaust but can be sufficient to warrant additional control, especially in facilities with stringent air quality targets. The concept emphasizes the need for secondary or tertiary treatment stages.

Common sources include petrochemical refiners, paint and coatings operations, metal finishing, wastewater and solid waste treatment facilities, incineration, and certain food-processing lines. Factors such as process design, operating conditions, and the efficiency of primary controls influence the size and composition of residuargas.

Measurement and management rely on standard air-emission practices. Gas concentration is typically reported in parts per million by volume or milligrams per cubic meter and measured with techniques such as gas chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, or portable detectors. Control technologies applied to residuargas include activated carbon adsorption, catalytic or thermal oxidation, biofiltration, wet scrubbers, and membrane separation.

Environmental and regulatory considerations address potential impacts on air quality, ozone formation, and human health. Facilities may be subject to emission permits and reporting requirements that specify limits for residual gases after primary treatment.
