A receptor is a protein that binds a signaling molecule (ligand) and triggers a cellular response. In Finnish, reseptori is the term used for this concept, and reseptorista is the genitive singular form used in phrases describing the receptor’s properties or actions. Receptors are essential for interpreting chemical signals and translating binding events into intracellular actions through conformational changes that activate signaling pathways.

Receptors are located on the cell surface or inside the cell. Membrane receptors include ligand-gated ion channels, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and enzyme-linked receptors such as receptor tyrosine kinases. Intracellular receptors, often activated by lipophilic ligands like steroid hormones, typically regulate gene transcription by acting as transcription factors after ligand binding.

Ligand binding is governed by affinity and specificity, and the cellular response depends on receptor density, ligand concentration, and the receptor’s conformational state. Pharmacology distinguishes several functional categories: agonists activate receptors; antagonists block activation; partial agonists produce a partial response; and inverse agonists reduce constitutive receptor activity. Inhibition can be competitive or non-competitive, and allosteric modulators can enhance or diminish receptor responses.

Receptors play central roles in physiology and medicine, mediating sensation, neural signaling, immune responses, and hormonal regulation. They are common drug targets, but can also be affected by toxins and environmental chemicals. Research approaches include radioligand binding assays, fluorescence-based binding studies, structural biology, and functional assays that measure downstream signaling or gene expression.
