Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov, commonly known as Repin (Russian: Репин), was a prominent Russian painter and one of the leading figures of the Peredvizhniki movement, an influential group of realist artists in 19th-century Russia. Born on July 5, 1844, in Chuguyev, now part of modern-day Ukraine, he initially trained as an icon painter before studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. His early works reflected religious and historical themes, but he later became known for his portraits, genre scenes, and large-scale historical compositions.

Repin’s style evolved from academic realism to a more expressive and emotionally charged approach, capturing the essence of his subjects with remarkable depth. His most famous works include *The Volga Boatsmen* (1873), which showcases the laborers on the river, and *Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan* (1885), a haunting depiction of the Tsar’s tragic moment. Another notable piece is *The Unexpected Return* (1884), a poignant portrait of a woman confronting her unfaithful husband.

Beyond painting, Repin was an influential teacher, mentoring many artists who later became key figures in Russian art. He served as the president of the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1903 until his death on September 29, 1930, in Kuokkala (now Repino, Russia). His legacy endures as a defining voice in Russian art, bridging traditional techniques with modern emotional intensity. Many of his works are housed in major museums, including the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
