The concept contrasts with standard borrowing where interest compensates lenders for the use of money. In everyday use, rentefri most often appears in consumer finance as promotional offers such as 0% financing for a limited period on a purchase. Under such offers, the buyer pays no interest if the balance is paid in full before the promotional period ends and certain conditions apply, such as a minimum purchase amount, credit approval, and sometimes a requirement to take out insurance or pay fees that effectively replace interest. If the buyer does not repay in time or misses payments, interest can be charged retroactively, or additional penalties may apply.
