Remissies, or remission, describe a reduction or disappearance of signs and symptoms of a disease. Remission can be partial or complete and may be temporary or sustained. It is not always synonymous with cure; in many conditions the disease may return after a period of remission, a relapse.

In oncology, remission refers to a decrease in tumor burden as assessed by imaging and lab tests. Complete remission means no detectable cancer after treatment, while partial remission indicates a defined reduction in measurable disease. The duration of remission is a key factor in prognosis and treatment planning. Some cancers achieve durable remission, which may be interpreted as a cure in rare cases; others relapse despite initial responses.

In psychiatry and mental health, remission denotes the reduction or absence of clinically significant symptoms for a sustained period. Criteria for remission vary by disorder and may involve symptom scales and functional recovery. Partial remission describes lingering symptoms that do not meet full diagnostic criteria.

In autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, clinical remission implies a state of no or minimal disease activity, sometimes with normalization of laboratory markers. Achieving and maintaining remission often requires ongoing therapy or lifestyle changes, and discontinuation of treatment must be carefully managed to minimize relapse risk.

Assessment of remission uses disease-specific criteria and time frames. In cancer, criteria such as RECIST or similar standards are common, while mental health uses validated symptom and functioning measures. Remission is a central goal in many medical fields, guiding treatment decisions, monitoring, and discussions about prognosis.
