Religious education (RE) is a field of formal schooling and informal learning that aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, practices, histories, and their roles in societies. Global practice varies: in many countries RE is mandated or strongly supported, with models ranging from denominational instruction to secular, descriptive or interfaith approaches intended to foster understanding and tolerance. In other systems, especially some public schools in the United States, RE is limited or framed as ethics or worldviews rather than theology; private or faith-based schools may offer more doctrinal instruction.

Historically, RE emerged from religious instruction and missionary schooling and has evolved with modern secular schooling, legal frameworks, and global interfaith dialogue. Today, practices reflect local laws, cultural contexts, and ongoing discussions about secularism, pluralism, and religious freedom.
