Relieftype is a printing technique where the image or text is raised from the printing surface. This is in contrast to intaglio printing, where the image is incised into the surface. In relieftype, the areas intended to receive ink are raised, while the surrounding areas are cut away. When ink is applied to the raised surface and then transferred to paper, the inked areas appear raised on the final printed material.

Historically, relieftype printing is most famously associated with letterpress printing. In letterpress, raised characters or images are set into a printing plate or individual type blocks. Ink is rolled onto these raised surfaces, and then paper is pressed against them, creating a distinct tactile impression. This technique was the dominant form of commercial printing for centuries.

Modern applications of relieftype include certain types of stationery, business cards, and specialty packaging where a premium feel and visual depth are desired. While less common for mass-produced publications due to the expense and labor involved compared to offset lithography or digital printing, relieftype offers a unique aesthetic and tactile quality. The process can be adapted to various materials, though paper remains the most common substrate. The characteristic impression left by relieftype is often referred to as "bite" or "emboss," and it contributes to the perceived quality and craftsmanship of the printed piece.
