Regulaatorid are devices or systems that maintain a controlled variable at a predetermined value by adjusting an input. They are used to stabilize processes, protect equipment, and improve performance across electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal systems. Regulaatorid can be passive or active, analog or digital, and may be integrated into larger control systems.

Common types include electrical regulators (voltage regulators and power supply regulators), mechanical governors for engines, pneumatic and hydraulic pressure regulators, and thermal or flow regulators. In electronics, linear and switching regulators regulate output voltage or current; in mechanical systems, governors control speed or rotational position; in fluid and gas systems, regulators control pressure or flow rate.

Operation relies on a feedback control loop. A sensor measures the regulated variable and reports to a controller, which compares it with a setpoint and generates a corrective signal. An actuator implements the adjustment, changing the input to the process. Negative feedback tends to reduce error and promote stability; some systems use feedforward or advanced control algorithms (PID, gain scheduling) for improved performance.

Applications are widespread: consumer electronics (voltage regulators in power supplies), automotive systems (fuel pressure regulators, turbo wastegate control), industrial automation (process control valves, pressure regulators), HVAC (thermostats as heat regulators), and fluid power systems. Regulators are designed with specifications for accuracy, range, response time, and stability, and may introduce trade-offs such as efficiency, noise, or overshoot. In Estonian usage, regulaatorid can also refer to regulatory authorities that supervise markets and enforce rules, distinct from technical regulators.
