Registerfilen, or the registry file, is a term used to describe a data file that stores a registry: a structured store of configuration entries used by software or an operating system to persist settings, preferences, and state information. Such a file functions as a central repository that allows applications and the system to remember how they should behave across restarts.

Registries are typically organized hierarchically, with keys (nodes) that can contain subkeys and values. Each value has a name, a data type (such as string, integer, binary, or boolean), and a data payload. Access to the registry is usually provided through specific APIs, enabling programs to read and write settings in a controlled way. The design aims to provide fast lookup, centralized management, and consistent behavior across components.

Different platforms store registries in different formats. In Windows, the registry is stored as a set of hive files, often located in the Windows System32 Config directory and in user profiles as NTUSER.DAT. These files are typically binary and are loaded into memory by the OS at boot or user login. Other environments may use text-based formats or database-backed stores, such as INI files, JSON, XML, or SQLite databases, particularly for per-application configuration. Mac systems commonly employ plist files, while many Linux applications use dotfiles and config directories.

Because registries influence startup, behavior, and security, editing them requires caution. Corruption can cause software or system instability. Tools exist to export, import, or back up registry data, and administrators often maintain regulated access controls to protect integrity.
