Refractoriness refers to the property of a material to withstand high temperatures without deforming, melting, or degrading. It is a crucial characteristic for materials used in high-temperature applications such as furnaces, kilns, and engines. Materials exhibiting high refractoriness are known as refractory materials.

The refractoriness of a material is determined by its chemical composition, its crystalline structure, and the presence of any impurities. Generally, materials with high melting points and strong chemical bonds tend to be more refractory. Common refractory materials include ceramics, oxides, carbides, nitrides, and certain metals and alloys. For example, alumina (aluminum oxide) and silicon carbide are widely used due to their excellent thermal stability.

The assessment of refractoriness often involves determining the material's softening point or melting point. This can be done through various standardized tests, such as the pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) test, which measures the temperature at which a ceramic cone softens and bends. Other methods involve direct measurement of melting points or observing material behavior under controlled high-temperature conditions.

Beyond simply resisting melting, refractoriness also encompasses resistance to chemical attack from molten slags, gases, and other corrosive substances present at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a refractory material must not only maintain its structural integrity but also its chemical stability in harsh environments. The selection of appropriate refractory materials is critical for the efficiency, safety, and longevity of high-temperature industrial processes.
