Referencearkitektur is a high-level, reusable blueprint for a family of systems or a domain. It describes typical components, their responsibilities, how they interact, and the nonfunctional requirements they share.

The purpose is to accelerate design, ensure consistency across projects, promote interoperability, and reduce risk by reusing proven patterns and interfaces.

Core elements include architectural views for layers and components, defined interfaces, data models, and deployment considerations; standard interaction patterns (synchronous APIs, messaging, event-driven flows); and nonfunctional requirements such as scalability, security, and maintainability.

A referencearkitektur is not a finished solution. It is a template used to guide solution architectures and product families. It can be informed by reference models and standards from frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman, or domain-specific guidelines.

Typical domains include enterprise IT, cloud platforms, data integration, and software product lines. Common examples are reference architectures for cloud-native microservices, data lake or data platform deployments, and IoT ecosystems.

Creation and maintenance involve identifying common requirements, scoping, selecting appropriate architectural styles, defining components and interfaces, and documenting governance, versioning, and mapping to concrete platforms.

Adoption considerations include alignment with business strategy, governance, and lifecycle management; risk of over-prescription or outdated patterns; and ongoing evolution as technology changes.
