Reeffriendliness is a term used to describe the extent to which human activities, products, or policies are compatible with coral reef ecosystems and designed to minimize negative impacts. It encompasses chemical, physical, and ecological considerations that influence reef health, resilience, and biodiversity.

Criteria commonly associated with reeffriendliness include the avoidance of harmful substances or practices, such as certain chemicals that damage corals or disrupt reef-associated life; minimization of physical damage from anchors, trampling, or sediment runoff; sustainable fishing and harvesting practices; and effective waste management to prevent pollution. In consumer contexts, reef-friendly labeling tends to emphasize non-toxic ingredients, responsible manufacturing, and transparent sourcing.

Applications of the concept appear in three main areas: consumer products marketed as reef-friendly (for example, sunscreen and cosmetics with approved ingredient lists), tourism and recreation practices that reduce contact with delicate reef habitats and promote careful stewardship, and policy or corporate strategies aimed at reducing reef-related risks and supporting restoration efforts.

Measurement and communication challenges include inconsistent definitions, varying regional reef sensitivities, and debates over the scientific basis of some claims. Critics argue that marketing labels can be vague or misleading without independent verification or standardized criteria, highlighting the need for clear standards and robust testing.
