Redoksstatus, often translated as redox status, is a description of the overall oxidation–reduction state of a chemical system. It reflects the tendency of the system to gain electrons (be reduced) or to lose electrons (be oxidized) under the given conditions. The redoksstatus is primarily determined by the redox potential, the relative activities of oxidants and reductants, and, in aqueous systems, by pH and the presence of catalytic species. It is not a fixed property of a substance alone but a property of a system defined by composition, temperature, and environment.

Redox potential and measurement: The tendency to gain or lose electrons is quantified by the redox (Eh) potential, typically measured against a reference electrode. Under standard conditions, the standard redox potential provides a baseline for the couple. In real systems, Eh depends on concentrations, pH, and temperature, and can be described by the Nernst equation. Pourbaix diagrams map stable species as a function of Eh and pH, illustrating how redoksstatus changes with conditions.

Applications: In chemistry and materials science, redoksstatus helps predict reaction direction and stability of species, e.g., in corrosion, catalysis, or electrochemical cells. In biology, redox balance influences metabolism, signaling, and oxidative stress. In environmental science, redox conditions govern nutrient cycling, metal speciation, and contaminant mobility.

Measurement and assessment: Eh measurements with platinum or gold working electrodes and reference electrodes are common. Redox indicators or electrochemical probes can provide qualitative assessments. Redox status is often reported alongside pH and other chemical cues to provide a holistic view of a system’s oxidative environment.
