Historically, the rearmotor layout was popularized by smaller, more affordable vehicles. The Volkswagen Beetle is a prime example, utilizing its rear-mounted air-cooled engine to provide ample passenger and cargo space. Other notable rearmotor vehicles include the original Chevrolet Corvair and various microcars. The design often leads to a distinctive weight distribution, with a significant portion of the vehicle's mass over the driven wheels.

Advantages of the rearmotor layout can include improved traction, especially in slippery conditions, due to the weight over the drive wheels. It also allows for a compact front end, potentially offering more interior space or a different aesthetic. However, rearmotor vehicles can present challenges in terms of handling dynamics. The significant weight at the rear can lead to oversteer, requiring careful suspension tuning and driver input.
