Rearchitect is a term used in software engineering to describe the process of redesigning the architecture of a system or component to meet new requirements, constraints, or opportunities. It is distinct from code refactoring, which changes implementation without altering the high-level structure, and from a complete rewrite, which starts from scratch. Rearchitecting can apply to software applications, data platforms, networking architectures, and organizational processes that rely on technology.

Common motivations include the need to scale to larger workloads, improve reliability and security, reduce operational cost, enable faster development cycles, or enable deployment in new environments such as cloud or edge. It often involves rethinking major architectural elements such as component boundaries, data models, integration patterns, deployment topology, and nonfunctional requirements like observability and resilience.

Approaches to rearchitecture vary. Some teams pursue incremental evolution, breaking a monolith into smaller services, adopting microservices or event-driven architectures, or migrating to cloud-native patterns. Others perform a more radical change, refactoring or replacing critical subsystems in phases to minimize risk. Decisions are typically guided by architectural decision records, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments, with an emphasis on testability, backward compatibility, and clear migration paths.
