In modern workflows, edits are often non-destructive, preserving the original raw data and allowing adjustments to be changed at any time during output.

Input formats commonly include a wide range of proprietary raw formats produced by camera brands, such as CR2/CR3, NEF, NRW, ARW, ORF, RAF, PEF, and RW2, among others. Output options typically include TIFF and JPEG, with many tools also able to export to PNG or to universal raw formats such as DNG. Many rawconverters offer color-management features, lens correction profiles, and support for batch processing or scripting to automate repetitive tasks.

Rawconverters can operate as standalone applications or as components of larger photo-management or non-destructive editing suites. They are valued for giving photographers control over white balance, exposure, contrast, and color fidelity while keeping the option to re-process at any time.
