Ratedetecting is the process of estimating or identifying the data rate, sampling rate, or symbol rate of a signal or data stream, particularly when the rate is unknown or variable. It is used in telecommunications, digital media, and data analysis to aid demodulation, synchronization, and rate adaptation. The term is used in telecommunications and signal processing and is sometimes called rate estimation, bitrate inference, or clock recovery, depending on context.

In telecommunications, blind or semi-blind ratedetecting involves analyzing the received signal to estimate bit rate using techniques such as preambles or pilot sequences, spectral analysis, autocorrelation, cyclostationary feature detection, and clock recovery to synchronize with the transmitter. These methods aim to recover timing information and enable correct demodulation in the absence of explicit rate information or under changing channel conditions.

In adaptive streaming and media delivery, rate detection refers to methods by which clients infer available bandwidth and choose an appropriate bitrate (adaptive bitrate streaming). The client monitors throughput, latency, and buffer states to select a bitrate that maintains quality of service, helping to prevent stalls while maximizing visual or audio fidelity.

Challenges include noise and interference, channel variability, encryption hiding training sequences, multi-rate sources, and non-stationary environments. Accurate ratedetecting can be difficult when signals are corrupted, when there is rapid rate variation, or when prior information about the transmitter is limited.
