There are two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). AFLD is caused by excessive alcohol consumption, while NAFLD is not associated with alcohol and can be linked to other factors.

NAFLD is a spectrum of liver conditions that includes simple fatty liver (steatosis), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Simple fatty liver means fat is present in the liver but without inflammation or liver cell damage. NASH involves inflammation and liver cell damage, which can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is severe scarring of the liver that can impair its function and lead to serious complications.

Risk factors for NAFLD include obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, high cholesterol, and rapid weight loss. Symptoms are often absent in the early stages, but as the disease progresses, individuals may experience fatigue, weakness, and pain in the upper right abdomen.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to check liver enzymes, imaging tests like ultrasound or CT scans, and sometimes a liver biopsy for a definitive assessment. Treatment for NAFLD focuses on managing underlying conditions and lifestyle changes. This includes weight loss, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding alcohol. In cases of NASH with fibrosis or cirrhosis, specific medications may be considered, although there is no universally approved drug for NAFLD itself. Early detection and intervention are crucial to prevent progression to more severe liver damage.
