A rangehood, also known as a range hood or exhaust hood, is a kitchen appliance installed above a stove or cooktop to remove cooking fumes, steam, smoke, and grease. It helps improve indoor air quality and can reduce heat and odors in the kitchen.

There are two main types: vented (ducted) rangehoods and recirculating (ductless) rangehoods. Vented models draw air through grease filters and vent it to the outside via ductwork, providing effective removal of heat and pollutants. Recirculating models pull air through grease and activated charcoal filters and return the cleaned air to the room, which is easier to install but typically less effective at removing heat and odors. Downdraft ventilation, where a blower is integrated into the cooktop or counter, is another, less common option.

Common configurations include wall-mounted hoods, under-cabinet hoods, and island hoods designed for installation above an island cooktop. Hood width is usually matched to the cooking surface, with options commonly available in 30, 36, 42 inches, and larger for wider ranges.

Performance is described by airflow, measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute) or m3/h, and noise, reported in sones or decibels. Higher CFM provides more effective removal but can generate more noise. Hoods also incorporate lighting, typically LED, and filtration systems. Metal grease filters are usually dishwasher-safe, while recirculating units require replacement charcoal filters.

Installation considerations include sufficient ducting to the exterior for vented models, clearance height above the cooktop, and compliance with local codes. For recirculating hoods, external venting is not required but filtration must be maintained. Regular maintenance of filters and seals helps preserve performance and air quality.
