Räjähdysmäinen käynti, commonly referred to as "rajankäyntien" in informal Finnish, describes a sudden, uncontrolled combustion event within an internal combustion engine. This phenomenon occurs when the air-fuel mixture ignites prematurely, before the spark plug fires. Instead of a controlled burn, the fuel combusts rapidly and forcefully, creating a shockwave that can lead to audible knocking or pinging sounds from the engine.

Several factors can contribute to rajankäyntien. High engine temperatures, particularly in the combustion chamber, can cause the fuel-air mixture to auto-ignite. This can be exacerbated by carbon deposits on the piston crowns or cylinder head, which create hot spots.
