In data centers and telecom rooms, underfloor air distribution uses the plenum to supply conditioned air through perforated tiles or vents; in offices and laboratories, the void supports power and data distribution while keeping surfaces unobstructed.

Applications include data centers, server rooms, and telecommunications facilities, where underfloor air distribution and rapid reconfiguration are valued. Raised floors are also used in modern offices, archives, and broadcast studios that require flexible service access and modular room layouts.

Advantages include easy reconfiguration, concealed cabling and piping, and the ability to manage cooling via underfloor air distribution. Disadvantages can be higher initial and maintenance costs, potential moisture or flood risk, and the need for careful design to control dust, fire safety, and acoustics. The system requires attention to load rating, panel quality, surface slip resistance, and compatibility with anti-static requirements in sensitive environments.

Design considerations include determining required plenum height and air flow, ensuring proper sealing and insulation of the void, and selecting appropriate floor finishes. Standards and guidance commonly referenced with raised floors include EN 12825 and, for data centers, TIA-942.
