Railwagen, or railway wagon, is a rail vehicle designed to transport goods on rail networks. Key types include open wagons for bulk commodities, covered wagons with tarpaulins to protect goods, tank wagons for liquids or chemicals, hopper wagons for bulk unloading, refrigerated wagons for perishable cargo, and flat or container wagons for intermodal equipment. Some wagons are specialized for particular loads, such as steel coils, automobiles, or timber. Modern wagons typically ride on bogies, use standardized couplers, and are equipped with air brake systems and load-limiting devices.

Historically, railwagens evolved from early wooden freight cars in the 19th century to steel-bodied designs with standardized couplers and braking. Standardization of gauges, loading equipment, and traffic regulations enabled cross-border use, especially in Europe under organizations such as the International Union of Railways (UIC). In contemporary networks, wagon design emphasizes capacity, interoperability, efficiency, and safety, supported by digital tracking and maintenance systems. Railwagens remain a core element of freight transport, complementing intermodal freight and containerized logistics.
