A railbed, also known as a railway bed or trackbed, is the prepared ground or structure upon which railway tracks are laid. It serves as a foundation to support the tracks, ballast, and the immense loads of passing trains. The construction of a railbed is a critical engineering process, involving excavation, grading, and compaction to ensure stability and longevity.

The primary function of a railbed is to distribute the weight of the train over a wider area, preventing settlement and deformation of the underlying soil. This distribution is achieved through the use of ballast, typically crushed stone, which surrounds and supports the railway sleepers (ties). The ballast also provides drainage, preventing water from accumulating and weakening the structure.

The design of a railbed takes into account various factors, including soil type, climate, and expected traffic volume. In areas with poor soil conditions or high rainfall, more robust construction methods may be employed, such as the use of geotextiles or reinforced soil structures. Gradients and curves are carefully engineered to maintain safe operating speeds and minimize stress on the track and rolling stock.

Over time, railbeds require maintenance to ensure continued safety and efficiency. This includes tamping the ballast to re-establish its support for the sleepers, replacing worn-out ballast, and addressing any signs of erosion or settlement.
