Ragging is a form of initiation practice in which newcomers or juniors at educational institutions are subjected to intimidation, humiliation, or harassment by seniors. While historically associated with college life in some regions, ragging has spread to other settings such as residential halls and sports teams. The practice can take many forms, including verbal abuse, forced participation in tasks, humiliating or dangerous rituals, physical exertion, and coercion of sexual or discriminatory nature. It is often driven by power imbalances and a desire to enforce conformity, though intent and severity vary widely.

Ragging can cause severe physical and psychological harm, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and, in extreme cases, injury or suicide. Victims may experience stigma, withdrawal, or reluctance to seek help; witnesses may also be affected. Because it tends to occur in contexts with authority gradients, it can be difficult to report.

Many countries treat ragging or hazing as a disciplinary or criminal offense. In India, for example, regulations and guidelines from the University Grants Commission and various state authorities prohibit ragging and require anti-ragging measures, such as duly constituted anti-ragging committees, mandatory student orientation, and penalties for perpetrators and negligent institutions. Similar laws exist in some other jurisdictions under hazing or student conduct codes.

Prevention focuses on creating a campus environment that discourages abuse, including clear codes of conduct, confidential reporting channels, counseling and support services, and active mentoring and orientation programs. Institutions may publish anti-ragging notices, maintain helplines, and train staff and students to recognize and respond to ragging. Survivors are encouraged to seek help from authorities and support services, while bystanders are urged to intervene safely when possible.
