Rafmeiðslum, often translated as electrocution or electric shock, refers to the physiological reaction or injury caused by electric current passing through the body. The severity of the effects depends on several factors, including the voltage, current, resistance of the body, duration of contact, and the path the current takes through the body.

When an electric current enters the body, it can disrupt the normal electrical activity of tissues and organs. Mild shocks may cause a tingling sensation or a brief muscle contraction. More severe shocks can lead to involuntary muscle spasms, making it difficult to let go of the electrical source. This can prolong exposure and increase the risk of serious injury.

The heart is particularly vulnerable. Electric current passing through the chest can interfere with its natural rhythm, potentially causing ventricular fibrillation, a life-threatening condition. Burns are another common consequence of electrocution. Current entering and exiting the body can generate heat, leading to superficial or deep burns at the contact points. Internal organs can also be damaged by the heat generated.

Respiratory arrest can occur if the current affects the muscles responsible for breathing. In severe cases, electrocution can cause neurological damage, including unconsciousness, seizures, and long-term cognitive impairment. Fatalities from electrocution can result from cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or severe burns. Safety measures such as proper insulation, grounding, and avoiding contact with live electrical components are crucial for preventing accidental electrocution.
