r-Strategie, or r-strategy, is a term from life-history theory describing a reproductive strategy in which organisms maximize population growth by producing many offspring with minimal parental care. In the r/K selection framework, r-strategists emphasize rapid population increase (high intrinsic growth rate, r) rather than competitive ability in crowded environments. This strategy is thought to be advantageous in unstable or unpredictable habitats where the likelihood of juvenile survival is variable.

Key traits commonly associated with r-strategists include early sexual maturity, short generation times, high fecundity, little parental investment, and often high juvenile mortality. Individuals of this strategy tend to take advantage of transient resources and rapidly colonize new or disturbed environments. When conditions are favorable, r-strategists can quickly increase their numbers; when conditions deteriorate, the same traits may lead to rapid population declines.

Examples of organisms often described as r-strategists include many insects (such as certain aphids and locusts), many annual plants (weeds), some small fish and amphibians, and certain microbes that reproduce rapidly. It is important to note that real-world life histories exist on a continuum between r- and K-strategies, and species may exhibit different strategies depending on life stage or environmental context.

Critiques of the dichotomy emphasize that it oversimplifies complex trade-offs and that modern life-history theory favors a continuum of strategies shaped by ecological and demographic factors. The concept remains a useful heuristic for understanding how reproductive strategies relate to environmental stability and resource availability.
