Pääsuoritin, often referred to as the central processing unit (CPU), is the primary component of a computer responsible for executing instructions. It performs the arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations specified by the instructions in a computer program. The CPU is the "brain" of the computer, handling all the computational tasks that allow a system to function.

The CPU typically consists of an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and a control unit (CU). The ALU performs arithmetic and logical operations, while the CU directs the flow of data and instructions within the processor and to other components of the computer. Modern CPUs also include cache memory, which is a small, fast memory located on or near the CPU to speed up access to frequently used data.

The performance of a CPU is measured by several factors, including clock speed, which indicates how many cycles the CPU can execute per second, and the number of cores, which are independent processing units within a single CPU. More cores generally allow a CPU to handle more tasks simultaneously, improving multitasking capabilities.

CPUs have evolved significantly over time, from single-core processors with limited capabilities to multi-core processors with advanced features like hyper-threading, which allows a single physical core to act as multiple logical cores. This continuous development has led to increasingly powerful and efficient computing devices.
