Päikesekuumus, also known as sunstroke or heatstroke, is a severe medical condition caused by the body overheating. It typically occurs when the body's temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, and the body is unable to cool itself down. This can happen due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, especially during physical exertion in hot, humid conditions.

The initial stages of päikesekuumus can manifest as heat exhaustion, characterized by heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and a rapid pulse. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke, a life-threatening emergency. Symptoms of heatstroke include a high body temperature, hot and dry skin (or sometimes profuse sweating), confusion, delirium, seizures, and loss of consciousness. The body's internal organs can be damaged by the extreme heat.

Immediate medical attention is crucial for anyone suspected of having päikesekuumus. While waiting for professional help, the affected person should be moved to a cooler environment, their clothing should be loosened, and their skin should be cooled down using methods such as sponging with cool water or applying ice packs to the armpits, groin, and neck. Hydration is also important if the person is conscious and able to drink, but liquids should be given slowly. Prevention of päikesekuumus involves staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible.
