The absence of gears, brakes, and derailleurs contributes to the bike's minimal weight and aerodynamic efficiency. Braking is achieved by resisting the rotation of the pedals, a technique known as back-pedaling. Track bikes have a very short wheelbase and aggressive geometry, promoting a hunched-over riding position for optimal aerodynamics and quick maneuvering. The handlebars are typically drop bars, allowing riders to adopt various positions depending on the demands of the race.
