Pysäköintitutkat, known in English as parking sensors, are electronic devices designed to assist drivers with parking maneuvers. They function by emitting ultrasonic or electromagnetic waves and detecting the echoes that return when these waves strike an object. This allows the system to determine the distance between the vehicle and surrounding obstacles.

Typically, parking sensor systems consist of several sensors mounted on the front and/or rear bumpers of a vehicle. These sensors are connected to a control unit that processes the sensor data. When the vehicle is in reverse or moving at slow speeds, the control unit activates the sensors. As the vehicle approaches an obstacle, the system provides audible warnings to the driver. The frequency of these beeps typically increases as the vehicle gets closer to the object, providing a clear indication of proximity. Some advanced systems may also display a visual representation of the surroundings on a dashboard screen, often with colored zones indicating different levels of proximity.

The primary benefit of parking sensors is enhanced safety and convenience when parking, especially in tight spaces or areas with low visibility. They help prevent minor collisions with other vehicles, walls, or pedestrians. Parking sensors are a common feature in modern vehicles, offered as standard equipment or as an optional extra by many car manufacturers. Their effectiveness is generally good, although factors such as heavy rain, snow, or ice can sometimes temporarily affect their performance.
