The term is used in Swedish and Norwegian to describe both laboratory and industrial pyrolysis furnaces and household ovens with a pyrolytic self-cleaning feature. Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen, yielding char, tar, and gaseous products.

In laboratory and industrial contexts, pyrolysugns are typically electric furnaces or gas-fired chambers with refractory linings, precise temperature control, and options for inert gas purges. They are used to study material properties, perform analytical pyrolysis, or convert biomass and waste into char and volatile compounds. Operation involves loading samples in crucibles, selecting a temperature and residence time, and handling collected residues and byproducts with appropriate ventilation and emission controls.

In household kitchens, the term refers to self-cleaning ovens that perform a pyrolysis cycle. These ovens heat to around 430–500°C for several hours to carbonize residues into ash, which is wiped away after cooling. The cycle reduces manual cleaning, and modern models include safety interlocks and insulation to manage heat and prevent accidental opening during operation.

Safety and environmental considerations are important: high temperatures and evolved gases require proper ventilation, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment in laboratory settings, and appropriate disposal of ash and condensates. Industrial pyrolysugns may include exhaust treatment systems to manage volatile organic compounds and other emissions.
