Pyörrevirtahäviöt, also known as eddy current losses, are a phenomenon occurring in conductive materials subjected to changing magnetic fields. When a magnetic field fluctuates within a conductor, it induces circulating currents within the material itself. These induced currents, known as eddy currents, flow against the direction of the applied magnetic field and dissipate energy as heat due to the material's electrical resistance. This energy loss is directly proportional to the square of the magnetic field strength, the frequency of the field variation, and the material's resistivity, and inversely proportional to its thickness.

These losses are particularly significant in applications involving transformers, electric motors, and generators, where alternating magnetic fields are prevalent. The heat generated by eddy currents can reduce the efficiency of these devices and potentially lead to overheating. The insulation between these laminations increases the overall resistance within the core, thereby hindering the flow of eddy currents and reducing energy dissipation.
