Puuöljyjä are natural oils derived from various plant sources, primarily used for the treatment and protection of wooden surfaces. These oils penetrate the wood, nourishing it from within and enhancing its natural grain and color. Unlike varnishes or lacquers, which form a surface film, wood oils cure into the wood itself, offering a more matte and natural-looking finish.

The most common types of puuöljyjä include linseed oil, tung oil, and Danish oil. Linseed oil, extracted from flax seeds, is widely used but can take a long time to dry and may darken over time. Tung oil, pressed from the nuts of the tung tree, offers excellent water resistance and a durable finish, though it can be more expensive. Danish oil is typically a blend of drying oils, such as linseed or tung oil, often combined with varnishes or resins to speed up drying time and improve durability while still retaining a natural appearance.

Puuöljyjä are applied by saturating a cloth with the oil and wiping it onto the wood surface. Excess oil is usually wiped off after a period of absorption. Multiple coats may be applied to achieve the desired level of protection and sheen. Regular reapplication is often recommended for high-traffic areas or surfaces exposed to moisture to maintain the wood's health and appearance. These oils are favored for their ability to protect wood from drying out, cracking, and becoming brittle, while also providing a degree of water repellency.
