puukansi

Puukansi is a small island located in the Torne Valley of northern Sweden, just south of the Norwegian border. The island is situated in the Torne River, which forms a natural border between Sweden and Finland. Puukansi Island is about 50 hectares in size and is surrounded by shallow waters, making it accessible only by foot or by taking a short boat ride.

The island's history dates back to the Stone Age, with archaeological findings suggesting human presence during the Mesolithic period. Puukansi has also been home to various cultural and archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, including stone age tombs and prehistoric hunting structures. The island's strategic location made it an important site for trade and commerce during the medieval period.

Puukansi is known for its many fallen trees and resulting unique landforms, including a small boulder mound and a cluster of waseland (alder tree ecosystem). Despite its small size, the island has a rich biodiversity, supporting species like the lynx, otter, and beaver. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the siberian jay and the European white-tailed eagle.

Today, Puukansi Island is part of the Tre Kronor Game Park (Luostottilas), a national park in Sweden. Efforts have been made to protect and preserve the island's natural and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the park by certified guided tours that are conducted independently of personal use.
